Our Science lessons had extended beyond the walls of our classroom. During our Science lessons, we visited our Science eco-garden to look for living and non-living things. When we returned to our class, we had a brainstorming of what living animals and plants had we noticed in the garden.

16 January - "Picnic" lesson on storybooks

As we have a very big classroom, we often have "picnic" lessons whereby pupils placed theit table cloth on the floor and used it as a picnic mat. In this English leson, pupils learn what a fiction or non-fiction book is. They will also be completing a worksheet on "Knowing my storybook" today. On this worksheet, pupils will learn how to locate useful information about their book such as the author, illustrator and publisher. In the subsequent English Lesson on Monday, pupils will do a Show-and-Tell about their storybook using the worksheet.

Dramatization in English Lesson - Authentic Letter Writing

Dramatization was used in our English lesson on 11 January. Pupils role-played passengers on the train. Two pupils are the main characters. One boy roled-played a pupil from Northview Primary School, while another girl is from Peixin Primary School. The boy dropped his wallet and the Peixin pupil alerted him. The boy decided to write a Thank-you letter to Peixin Primary School to thank the girl for her kindness act. Through the use of a Story Map, I guided the pupils on how they can develop the story for the letter. Through this role-playing, writing a Thank-you letter becomes more authentic and meaningful. :)

7 January 2008 - Classifying objects in the newspaper

In the Science lesson above, pupils classified pictures of objects they had brought according to different groups such as furniture, animals, plants and machines. Then they list out the names of the objects onto a paper. After collating all the pictures of objects together, pupils were amazed at the number of objects they had in each group. This activity makes classifying more authentic and fun. :)

7 January 2008 - Learning about Classification using the Tactile-Kinesthetic Way

Classification refers to the putting of things into groups in an orderly manner. In our Science lesson, pupils learnt the meaning of classification through actions and movements. In the lesson above, I grouped them according to different criteria such as races, hair-length, wearing spectacles and gender. By physically moving around in class, pupils had experienced for themselves the meaning of "classsification". :)

4 January 2008 - English Lesson

During our English lessons today, 3-Excellence pupils had an interesting group work. I introduced to them 4 friends - Nouns, Adjectives, Verbs and Adverbs. In their groups, pupils discussed what they know about these Parts of Speech. They had to give two examples for each. After that, each group presented what they had discussed to their classmates. After every group had presented, I wrote down on the whiteboard what these Parts of Speech means. E.g. Verb describes an action. It is important for pupils to recognise these parts of speech as it is essential for sentence structure. By being to identify what a noun, verb, adjective or adverb is, their English Grammar can greatly improved. :)

First day of school

For the first day of school, 3-Excellence pupils did a name card using construction papers. The
purpose of the name card is to enable them to know one another better. Pupils also introduced themselves to their classmates using a "About-Myself" form. They shared with their classmates about their favourite food, hobbies and their wish for the new year. Some pupils were also randomly selected to present themselves to their peers. By doing so, their confidence level will increase tremendously. :)
